So, What Exactly Does a Successful Freelance Writer DO?

Being a freelance writer sounds like a dream lifestyle to many people.

They think about the upside — “Yeah, working in my PJs, keeping my own hours, and not having a boss. Awesome!”

But most of the people I know who’re focused on those three things end up washing out as freelancers. They never take it seriously, don’t learn about how to run a business, and don’t take the steps needed to get their business going.

Soon, they’re broke and heading back to the day job world.

It takes a lot of work to be a successful freelance writer. And many people don’t even know what work is required.

Those of us who’ve been at this for (cough) decades tend to forget how boggling it can be, when you’ve been an employee all your life, to launch your own solo freelance biz.

Take this aspiring freelance writer, who recently wrote me:

“Basically, I don’t know anything about freelance writing. So, I guess I´d like to learn the basics. What does a freelance writer actually do?

“I know, write. But what about and who for, you know? Thanks!”–Marcia

I meet a lot of writers who say their goal is to become a six-figure freelancer.

You may find some ‘experts’ online who’ll tell you they earn six figures freelancing and hardly work — that they’re vacationing all the time, driving luxury cars, and enjoying the good life…and I’m here to tell you, they’re lying.

I’ve been a six-figure writer since 2011, when I hit that number entirely from my freelance gigs — not counting any blog or Freelance Writers Den revenue. At this point, I’ve had a few years to experience what this lifestyle is really like…

A Short Prayer for Freelance Writers

I’m just back from a religious retreat where we were encouraged to compose our own prayers.

Reading all the inspiring and uplifting thoughts our group came up with made me think there should be a prayer for freelance writers.

Shouldn’t there be? I’ve never seen one!

Of course, it’s easier to do this sort of thing while you’re still at a relaxing camp with others in a group to help you.

Doing this on my own, I found it was hard to keep it short! There are so many aspects to the freelance writing life in which we might ask for divine help.
